RYLA passed paticipants

District 1100 Rotary Youth Leadership Award course, or ‘RYLA’ for short, is held each year at the beginning of the school Summer holiday period  and provides a unique  opportunity for young people between 16 – 18 years of age, to join up to 40 others on a six day residential leadership course

Individual Rotary clubs sponsor RYLA participants, choosing applicants who they consider will benefit most from the course. Clubs invite applications from young people from schools, colleges, and youth groups; Guides, Scouts, the ATC and Army Cadets; or young people in employment.

Our RYLA programme is packed with testing, confidence building exercises which provide all participants with the opportunity to develop their leadership potential and communication skills. Together with our professional facilitator, we have developed a bespoke programme which is carefully structured to ensure a balance between challenging and theoretical tasks.

Course members will be part of a team; however, before joining the course, individuals will set their own short, medium and long term objectives. Their progress will be reviewed throughout the course during which the group leader will  ensure that participation in the activities is geared towards achieving objectives.  Activities include a ropes course, canoeing, climbing, abseiling and orienteering .

Our professional course leaders have a wealth of experience in leadership development and deliver our RYLA course to nationally recognised standards. While participants will have fun, our facilitator, and The Dean Field Studies Centre  and Rotary’s first priority is safety.

A RYLA Certificate of Achievement is awarded at the conclusion of the course. The experience is recognised as a valuable contribution towards the Gold Level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and, is a worthy addition to a CV.
