Earlier this summer, the Chepstow and District Rotary Club generously donated funds to Undy Primary School to support the construction of a new log cabin.

The cabin will provide a quiet teaching space, enhancing the school’s learning environment. The building is now nearly complete and is expected to be ready for use by January 2025.

The Rotary Club is pleased to announce that they were able to assist Undy Primary School with this valuable project.

BURNS SUPPER

On 22 January, members and guests of the Chepstow & District Rotary Club gathered at the Miller's Arms, Mathern to celebrate a traditional Burns Supper.

The evening began in grand style with a piper welcoming guests and ceremonially escorting the Haggis into the room. Mrs Fiona Gardener delivered the Address to a Haggis with passion and precision, setting the tone for the night.

The supper followed the time-honored Burns Supper format, featuring cock-a-leekie soup, followed by the iconic dish of haggis, neeps, and tatties, paired with a tot of whisky. All followed by Tipsy Lard, Coffee and Oatcakes.

Rtn. Richard Wickham gave a stirring Toast to the Immortal Memory of Robert Burns, paying tribute to his life and works. Burns, born in 1759 in Alloway, Ayrshire, was the eldest of seven children. Despite his humble beginnings on a struggling farm and limited formal education, Burns' genius as a poet shone through, earning him recognition as one of the greatest poets of all time.

His ability to capture universal themes of love, freedom, and humanity in the Scots dialect has made his works cherished across the world.

Rtn. Alan Duke followed with a heartfelt and witty Toast to the Lasses, which received an equally delightful reply from Mrs. Dee Wilson, the wife of the Club President. Rtn. John Gale concluded the evening with a vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all contributors and attendees.

The celebration was a resounding success, blending tradition, poetry, and fellowship, leaving everyone inspired by the legacy of Scotland’s national bard.
