2022  Memorial Garden

Chepstow & District Rotary Club took on the project of restoration of the memorial garden in St. Mary’s Church, Chepstow.

Rtn. Guy Wilson restored the metal railings around an important grave in the Memorial Garden at St Mary's Parish Church, Chepstow.

The grave is dedicated to James PROCTOR (1811-1869), his wife Martha PROCTOR (1819-1882) and their infant daughter Mary.  James ran Proctor’s Iron Stores, an ironmongery business at 5 Beaufort Square.

His son and grandson continued the business at 17 High Street until at least the 1950's.  Since the 1880’s there was a large “golden key” suspended outside, acting as their sign and trademark.  This sign is now in Chepstow Museum.

The Iron Stores employed a blacksmith, plumber, carpenter and locksmith as well as shop staff.  There are still examples of their wares around Chepstow, including railings at Granville Terrace, Sedbury Lane and more in Bridge Street.
